Mikel Arteta has learnt from his mistakes by sending Ethan Nwaneri on loan to Borussia Dortmund. That’s the view of European football expert Andy Brassell, who expects the Arsenal youngster to thrive in Germany after a bumpy ride on loan at Marseille during the second half of last season.Nwaneri has joined Dortmund on a season-long loanGettyNwaneri started promisingly with the French giants, where Mikel Arteta was happy to send the attacking midfielder to work under ‘really courageous manager’ Roberto De Zerbi – but De Zerbi’s departure just weeks after Nwaneri’s arrival threw a spanner in the works. And Brassell thinks Arteta ought to have been more wary of De Zerbi’s ‘combustible’ nature which might have precipitated his Marseille exit.‘A bad error’Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, he said: “I think Mikel Arteta has learnt from the mistake he made with loaning Nwaneri to Marseille, because he sort of pinned his hopes on De Zerbi [who took over at Tottenham in March].“De Zerbi wanted a No.10 to build the team around, but obviously De Zerbi was also on the edge of the volcano and Arteta should have realised that tying his player’s fate to a combustible coach – who I think people around Marseille knew might not be that far off a complete rupture – [wasn’t the best move].“That was a bad error and that cost Nwaneri a little.“I’m sure, on a human level, it was a growth experience for him – whereas with Dortmund, [manager] Niko Kovac is, I think, secure and in a good place, but really their idea of making the team younger and developing players, that’s Ole Book the sporting director as well.“So I think there’s more of a balance, more of a calm at Dortmund, even though it’s an equally enormous club. And that should really help him.“I think he’s got lots of other good young players that he can click with. This is a very different profile to the Marseille squad where it was loads of old dogs, I think you can say, on many occasions.“Of course, they have some younger players as well, but the way they lent on expensive imports from the Premier League I don’t think was a particularly positive thing for them.”But Dortmund should be a much more beneficial environment for Nwaneri, believes Brassell.Nwaneri scored twice in 11 appearances for Marseille last termGetty“It’s completely different at Dortmund,” he concluded. “They’re playing a lot of games, including the Champions League as well. He’ll get a lot of opportunities.“I think this move is really going to work for him.”Dortmund’s English influenceNwaneri, 19, is one of two young English players in the Dortmund squad. He’s joined by Jobe Bellingham, who followed in his brother Jude’s footsteps by signing for the eight-time Bundesliga champions last year. And Nwaneri is off to a good start with BVB, playing an important part in a late match-winning own goal as his new team fought back from 2-0 down to beat Hoffenheim 3-2 on his debut last weekend. The England Under-21 international, who became the youngest player in Premier League history when he made his Arsenal debut aged 15 years and 181 days against Brentford four years ago, will be hoping to feature again when Dortmund host Villarreal in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.
