Venezia suffered its fourth-straight Serie A defeat of the new season on Friday and also lost its team captain in the process. American midfielder Gianluca Busio left Friday’s 4-2 loss to Fiorentina in the 44th minute with an apparent lower-body injury. Busio could not put any weight on his right leg and was helped off the field by two Venezia staff members. Busio assisted on Akor Adams’ opening goal of the match in the 22nd minute but Fiorentina would rally and eventually grab advantage of the match. Franco Mastantuono scored twice before the interval before completing his hat trick later in the second half. Mateo Pellegrino came off the bench to score Fiorentina’s third goal of the match ahead of Mastantuono’s hat trick finish. Antoine Hainaut scored a consolation goal for Giovanni Strapa’s men ahead of the final whistle. Busio, 24, helped Venezia lift the Serie B title last season, earning a second promotion with the club. The former Sporting KC homegrown midfielder has made 175 appearances for Venezia since joining from MLS in 2021. Strapa is already concerned about Busio’s availability going forward into the fall months, especially with Venezia sitting bottom of the Serie A standings. “We fear a significant injury,” Strapa told DAZN in a postmatch interview.Busio’s injury also comes at a frustrating time for him ahead of the U.S. Men’s National Team’s first post-World Cup window. Mauricio Pochettino’s men will play four friendlies over a two-week span, starting with a friendly against Peru in Orlando, Florida on September 26. Venezia’s final match before the international break comes at home against Lazio on September 19.
