Keely Hodgkinson was thankful opponent Veronica Vancardo still had all her teeth after the Swiss runner suffered a nasty fall.There were contrasting fortunes for the pair at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships on Friday evening.Veronica Vancardo was tripped during Friday’s semi-finalGettyVancardo was left bloodied after tumbling over in the 800 metres semi-final – a race eventually won by Hodgkinson who secured top spot in Saturday’s final which will see the champion earn a whopping £111,000.Vancardo, who appealed to the race officials, will also feature in the final after continuing despite being tripped over mid-race.And that will see nine athletes line up rather than the customary eight, in the hope of landing the grand prize in Budapest.Hodgkinson was clear of the pack at the time of Vancardo’s fall and was unaware of the situation.But after crossing the finish line, the 2024 Olympic gold medallist quickly checked in on her fellow athlete.Pressed for an update on Vancardo, Hodgkinson said: “This season we’ve had our fair share of people falling over, unfortunately, but she’s still got all her teeth, so she’ll be OK. Unfortunately, that happens.“That’s one of my worst nightmares. Touch wood, it hasn’t happened to me so far, but yeah, she’ll be OK, and it’s part of racing, unfortunately.”Hodgkinson’s thoughts on the new qualifying formatWhen asked about her opinion on the change of format from two rounds to three at major championships, she added: “It’s still a championship mindset. “It means the first round’s harder than usual because you’re going straight into a semi-final, but I’m happy with that performance. “Glad to be back and running. It was a lot of fun, it looks amazing.”Hodgkinson and other fellow competitors quickly checked in on VancardoGettyThe Team GB star eased into Saturday’s lucrative £111,000 finalGettyIt was Hodgkinson’s first time competing since last month’s European Championship and the 24-year-old admitted she had just one goal in mind.“Get through it and complete it,” she said. “It’s been a month since I last raced, so it’s nice to get that one out through the legs, and we’ll come back tomorrow and hopefully go a bit better.”The Team GB star came out on top in the qualifiers with a time of 57.57 seconds.That put her over a second ahead of European champions Audery Werro who was victorious in the second semi-final.Hodgkinson will line up in Saturday’s final against Werro, Vancardo, Addison Wiley and Sarah Billings.Also qualified are Italy’s Eloisa Coiro, Femke Croeders-Bol, Prudence Sekgodiso, Nigist Getachew and Valentina Rosamilia.
