Paul Merson has explained why Tottenham’s whole season could be riding on the result of their clash against Everton today.Spurs go in search of their first win of the season as Everton become the second side to visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this campaign.David Moyes’ side are unbeaten so far this term and are riding high on confidence after their late equaliser against Man United last week.In sharp contrast, Roberto De Zerbi’s men are yet to get going this term, having just one point on the board and still yet to score a goal in the Premier League. Saturday 12th September Premier League TottenhamTottenham17:30EvertonEvertonThe former Arsenal midfielder believes that a win could really kickstart Tottenham’s season but a defeat would severaly dent their confidence, and could set them up for another extremely challenging captain.Merson told Sky Sports: “Spurs have to beat Everton this weekend. It’s a cup final for them – I’d go as far as to say this is their season on the line. If they lose to Everton, then you starting thinking: this is going to be another grind of a season. Here we go again. You would start really, really worrying as a Tottenham fan.“But if they go and beat Everton, you start going two games without a defeat, they’ll be on four points. Then all of a sudden you can build from there. It’s not as big as the Spurs vs Everton game on the final day of last season. If they lost that game, they were going to Lincoln.“But, at the moment, I just don’t see this team putting five or six wins on the trot together. So this is a big football match. The start Spurs have had is Brentford away, Newcastle at home and Nottingham Forest away. If they lose to Everton and have one point from four games, you start to worry.“If they beat Everton, then they’ve got every chance of beating Aston Villa at home next week. If they don’t beat Everton, they’re not beating Villa. That’s how it works. It’s a snowball effect. When you win football matches, you expect to win the one after. But if you don’t, the confidence goes.”Two key Spurs defenders could miss the game against EvertonUntil Friday, it was thought that Mukhailo Mudryk, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons were Tottenham’s only absentees. However, De Zerbi has revealed that both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie have minor problems and that he may not risk either full-back today. The good news for the Lilywhites is that James Maddison is available for selection after missing the last two league matches, and his return could help solve some of their creativity issues.READ MORE: Tottenham and Arsenal blow as manager ‘completely shuts the door’ on Saudi signingThe post Tottenham already have a ‘cup final’ as early as September, says Paul Merson appeared first on Spurs Web.
