Right now, jumping into a simulated world takes a headset and a few minutes. Augmented reality goes the other way, dropping digital objects into the room you’re already standing in.Neither is remotely convincing yet. But push that technology forward far enough and you eventually get computers capable of generating entire universes, populated by people who have no idea anything is unusual about their world.Which raises the question this whole idea rests on. If we could build that, how would we ever know nobody had already built ours?Here’s the observation that keeps this argument alive. Everything around us runs on mathematics.Nature behaves predictably enough that a handful of calculations will tell you what it’s about to do. Want to know how fast a car is moving? Measure the distance, measure the time, and the answer falls out.Our genetic code has a mathematical model behind it too. All of which looks suspiciously like something written rather than something that simply happened.So say it is a simulation. Who’s running it?An advanced alien civilization is the obvious guess. There’s a stranger possibility though, which is that it isn’t aliens at all, but some far future version of humanity running simulations of their own ancestors.That would make you a memory. Someone’s great great great grandmother, being replayed.Running something like that would demand computing power on a scale that’s hard to even describe, simulating reality down to the subatomic level. Far beyond anything we could currently design.And here’s the part that makes people uneasy.If we ever reached that level of technology and started running our own detailed simulations, it would count as fairly strong evidence that we’re inside one already. A simulation building a simulation.Follow that logic and it doesn’t stop. Our creators are probably somebody else’s program too.The chain could stretch back through generations of nested realities, with each layer slightly less advanced than the one above it, because no simulation can quite match the technology of whatever built it.The uncomfortable truth underneath all this is that you’d never be able to tell. There’s no proof you’re living in a simulation, and no proof you aren’t.Unless you go looking for glitches.Any code has bugs, and if reality is code, then somewhere in it are the errors nobody caught. Every time the people running it pushed an update, something might slip.Meeting your doppelgänger could be one. Someone who looks exactly like you and shares no relation whatsoever, which is either a coincidence or a mix up in character appearance settings.Then again, if we ever did confirm we were a program on someone’s hard drive, it would probably be because they let us.Which makes escaping tricky, since any exit would be part of the design. Break out of the matrix and you’d land on another level of it.Or worse, discovering who made us prompts a reboot. One enormous Ctrl Alt Del applied to the entire universe.Reality probably isn’t a quantum computer simulation. But suppose it is. Would anything about tomorrow actually change for you?Probably not.
