A woman who posts on TikTok as @maedyourday said she still cannot believe TSA agents once treated her like a threat when she was 10. In a story-time video, she said they stopped and searched her because they thought she was creating a bomb out of her carry-on. In the video caption, she wrote that she “can’t believe they thought I was a criminal mastermind at 10 years old.” She said the trip started the day after Christmas, when her family headed to Key Largo and Key West for New Year’s Eve. She described being disappointed at first because she thought she would have to leave her new toys at home. Her mom packed her clothes in a separate bag, she said. She then filled a carry-on with her iPad and nearly every toy she had received for Christmas until the bag was stuffed and felt like a brick. She said she put the bag on the conveyor belt, walked through security, and then saw the bag lighting up neon red on the monitor. She said about five TSA agents came over and flagged the bag. An alarm sounded as they looked for the owner and said, “There’s some bad stuff in here.” Her dad joked about what she had packed, she said, and her sisters laughed, and her mom was losing her mind. When agents asked, “Whose bag is this?” she walked over and said, “That’s my bag.” She claimed that agents pulled her aside with her parents for a full search because she was underage. They patted her down even though she was 10, she claimed, because they thought she was carrying illegal items. An agent in gloves and a mask opened the bag carefully, she said. She told him, “It’s just toys, dude.” The first item he pulled out was a small model person from an animation kit she had gotten for Christmas. She said he looked it over, said, “No, it’s not this,” and tossed it aside. She told him, “Hey, be careful with that.” Three agents, including a bomb specialist, kept examining the bag, she stated. Next, they pulled out a Crayola marker maker kit, she said. Agents tested the dyes and the machine with strips because they thought the chemicals might be used to make a bomb. After checking the kit, they decided it was not the source and kept searching. The item that seemed to confirm their concern, she said, was a giant tub of Crazy Aaron’s Galaxy Thinking Putty. Agents asked, “Ma’am, what is this?” She replied, “It’s silly putty, like, I don’t know.” She alleged an agent opened the tub, saw the slime, started handling it, and ran tests on a machine. She claimed the agents appeared convinced she was trying to create a bomb to blow up Fort Lauderdale airport. Such invasive searches can leave passengers feeling violated, like when an agent opens a personal journal during a TSA inspection. After more testing, she said, they gathered her toys and told her, “I think we need to throw all of this away.” She started sobbing in the middle of the airport because the toys were new Christmas gifts.
