Allied forces rarely cross platforms when it comes to serious rifle training, but that's exactly what happened when these U.S. Marines went “down under”. The Marines from the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion of the 4th Marine Division fielded the Australian Defence Force's Enhanced F88 Austeyr during the Coral-Balmoral Cup at Puckapunyal Military Area in Victoria. The annual competition hosted by the Royal Australian Armoured Corps exists to strengthen bonds with allied partners and exchange standard operating procedures, and nothing drives interoperability quite like hands-on experience with different weapon systems. Simply put - let’s go to the shooting range and get to know each other! The EF88 represents a significant evolution of the Steyr AUG bullpup platform that Australia has fielded for decades. It’s pretty incredible how long this design has survived. Improvements include ergonomics, extended accessory rails for optics and ancillary devices, and a refined gas system designed for absolute reliability with NATO-standard 5.56mm ammunition. For Marines accustomed to the M4 platform's flat profile and modular philosophy, the EF88 would offer an intriguing contrast. M4 or Bullpup?
