Hello everyone, I’m 20 and currently studying piano performance in college, and I am getting into teaching piano! I just recently had an interview where the studio owner liked me a lot and asked for my availability to teach, and she wrote it down and we also discussed recitals and payment. I’m so excited to be able to possibly teach kid’s piano, but the one thing I have to do before I start with her is to give a trial lesson in two days to her. I will teach her at the beginner level, as we discussed me teaching kids and beginners, but i’m not exactly sure how to go about it. I’m not sure if she’ll act as if she is at a later beginner level or a early beginner level, but anyways, the only time i have taught was teaching a student in a college piano lab class a semester or two ago. I did well on that and made him get an A, but it was more informal with no actual lesson plan. I’m very worried that I will have a bad lesson plan, or that I will come with a lesson plan that is not authentic to what she is looking for on Saturday. She mentioned breaking up a lesson in 3-4 different sections because Kid’s get distracted, but I’m not sure exactly how to do it. I was thinking 5 finger scales and chords for the first 5ish minutes and we work on the piece for 10-15 minutes, but i’m not sure what to do with rest of time or if I’m going to even teach 5 finger scales or octave scales or what chord progression to teach. I was thinking I-IV-V but also not sure if i should do I-V-I or something else. And how to format these sections whether it’s time or progress or whatever is the best way to judge them. And how do i know if going over these things will take a certain amount of time? I’m so nervous. She knows i never taught formal lessons before, but does anyone have any advice for a potential lesson plan or anything? I would really appreciate it! I’m so nervous!
