President Trump is now facing a legal challenge after his administration barred three news outlets from covering the White House last week. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed a lawsuit on Monday in district court in Washington, D.C., claiming the move violates the First Amendment and disrupts their ability to inform the public about government activities, The Hill reported. The attorneys representing these organizations argued in their filing that the ban “could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment nor a more blatant violation of our most fundamental constitutional principles.” The lawsuit contends that the block “retaliates against protected newsgathering and speech in violation of the First Amendment.” The suit claims the administration is using this ban to coerce more favorable coverage from these outlets, while also trying to deter other journalists from reporting on stories that President Trump might find unfavorable. The lawsuit explicitly asks the court to “immediately enjoin enforcement of the ban,” noting that the current situation is “already severely impeding the ability of CNN, MS NOW, and POLITICO to cover the President and his administration.” Trump denies that this is an attack on the free press The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly. He is the same judge who oversaw the White House’s temporary ban on a press credential belonging to former CNN reporter Jim Acosta during President Trump’s first term. He pushed back against the idea that he is attacking the press, stating, “The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish.” Instead, he argued that the administration is “instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS.” He further described the news outlets by saying, “It is corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control.” He added, “It is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped, NOW!” The President originally announced the ban on Friday, citing what he characterized as “fake news.” This decision has already triggered a response from the broader media community. On Monday, the TV pool responsible for covering the President’s daily movements decided to boycott those responsibilities. They did this in a show of solidarity with CNN, which is one of the member outlets. In a joint statement regarding the boycott, the networks made their position clear. “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government,” the networks wrote. “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”
