The financial landscape of the Texas Senate race is shifting rapidly as money flows in to support Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, though Elon Musk is noticeably keeping his involvement quiet this time around, NBC News reported. While Musk previously made headlines in Wisconsin by wearing a cheese hat and handing out checks, his current approach in Texas is much more low-profile. It’s a strategic pivot, especially considering he calls the state home and employs roughly 20,000 people through Tesla and SpaceX. Republicans are hoping he stays out of the spotlight. In recent interviews, more than half a dozen GOP strategists expressed a desire for Musk to replicate his 2024 model, which contributed to a sweep of the White House and Congress. There is a genuine concern among consultants that if Musk takes a high-profile role, he becomes an easy target for Democrats to paint as a boogeyman. One consultant noted that in Wisconsin, the focus shifted entirely to Musk’s spending rather than the candidate, which they viewed as a mistake. Another strategist suggested that those around Musk have learned from that experience and are adjusting accordingly. On the other side of the aisle, Democrats are actually inviting a more public display Nathan Johnson, a Democrat running to replace Paxton, challenged Musk directly, saying, “Elon, bring it. You’ve failed in Wisconsin. You’ll fail in Texas. I’m not afraid of Elon bringing his political money here. All these policies favor him or people like him.” Unlike in Wisconsin, Elon Musk has so far stayed out of the spotlight in Texas. https://t.co/BtgOm1oLvD— NBC News (@NBCNews) September 21, 2026 Democratic strategists like Luke Warford believe a loud, in-your-face campaign from Musk would only bolster the narrative that the election is a battle between elites and the working class. They argue that it plays right into the argument that billionaires are trying to buy the election to save a candidate like Paxton. The race itself is heating up, with America PAC already spending nearly $5.2 million on digital ads, mail, and live calls in Texas. While the group hasn’t officially stated how much more it plans to invest, it has already funneled more money into this specific Senate race than any other contest nationwide. America PAC spokesman Andrew Romeo stated, “America PAC is working in full coordination with the entire GOP apparatus and is investing in the states and districts that will decide control of the House and Senate. Our only priority is ensuring Republicans keep full control of Washington and stopping the lunatic left from bringing us back to the days of open borders, rampant crime, and woke policies.” Paxton has been in a tough spot financially, starting with significantly less cash on hand than Democrat James Talarico. However, the tide has turned with a flood of Republican money coming from various sources. Groups like MAGA Inc. have already committed $10 million in television advertising to help rectify the spending disparity. MAGA Inc. chief James Blair noted, “The fact is Ken Paxton had $100 million spent against him in the primary. Talarico had $0 spent against him in the primary, and that has an impact on candidate images that takes time to rectify. But the resources … have begun to be deployed now in earnest [and] will take care of that problem.” Despite the influx of capital, the race remains intense. Talarico’s campaign continues to lean into the idea that he is fighting against corporate-backed interests. Spokesman JT Ennis said, “Billionaire-backed dark money groups are lying about James because they’re scared of the people-powered movement we’re building to fix this broken, corrupt political system.”
