Former Tottenham man Jamie O’Hara has criticised Roberto De Zerbi’s decision to give Spurs players not on international duty a week off and offered an interesting solution to their home struggles. The extended international break has arrived for the first time after FIFA decided to combine two separate international breaks into one, meaning the two-week breaks that would normally take place at different points of the season have instead become one three-week period.Three weeks without football is turning out to be a long wait, although Tottenham Hotspur supporters are unlikely to complain too much given the form their club has shown so far. Spurs currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table with just two points from their opening five games and only two goals scored. Following the weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, De Zerbi admitted that this three-week break is important for players like James Maddison and Dominic Solanke to build up their fitness. However, one decision of his did not sit well with many.Credit: James Veysey/Shutterstock for London Football AwardsJamie O’Hara advises De Zerbi to train at the Tottenham Hotspur StadiumA total of 13 Tottenham players have been called up by their respective nations, while those who were not selected have been given the first week of the three-week international break off. However, the decision is difficult to reconcile with De Zerbi’s own repeated complaints over his players’ physical condition this season, which he has pointed to as one of the reasons behind Tottenham’s poor start.Even former Spurs man Jamie O’Hara has struggled to understand the decision. Speaking alongside Jason Cundy on The Sports Bar, O’Hara said: “Roberto De Zerbi’s given the players a week off. I don’t agree with that. We are not in a normal situation. If it was any of the other clubs that have been doing well, give them a week off.“Spurs need to be at the stadium. I would get the team at the stadium every single day until you make it feel like you’re home.”O’Hara was referring to Tottenham’s struggles at their own stadium, where they have won just nine of their previous 41 matches. He then offered a rather unusual solution.“I would move training to the stadium every single day until these players understand and feel like it is the norm to be there and play at that stadium. I would organise three or four friendlies in the international break at the stadium, not at the training ground because you get absolutely nothing out of it. “I want to see them playing at the stadium with crowd noise coming through. I’d even invite fans to watch some of the games.”Why Tottenham cannot simply train at the stadiumAs logical as O’Hara’s solution may sound, there are several reasons why it is easier said than done. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be in use for two NFL games during the international break – The Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders will contest the first match on October 4, before the Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles face each other one week later. That means the stadium will be preparing for those fixtures over the next three weeks before Tottenham return to action there against Coventry on October 19.NFL games are not the only reason the stadium is regularly unavailable during international breaks either. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium also hosts concerts, rugby, boxing and other corporate or private events – all of which bring significant revenue into the club.Tottenham, therefore, cannot simply avoid them as they help fund future spending.READ MORE: Tottenham’s Malachi Hardy is training with Harry Kane and England this week – Spurs WebThe post Roberto De Zerbi is offered an interesting solution to Tottenham’s poor home form appeared first on Spurs Web.
