A total of 1,600 on-the-spot fines have been issued to people who are not ordinarily resident in Malta in just two months, Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield has revealed.The fines were handed out by officers from the Malta Police Force and LESA for various contraventions.Bedingfield described the measure as part of efforts to maintain public order and act as a deterrent against people who, in his words, “abuse our hospitality”.The figures come following changes that doubled the minimum on-the-spot fine from €25 to €50, amid calls for increased enforcement across Malta.The system allows certain fines to be issued immediately, including to people who may not normally reside in the country.Bedingfield said the 1,600 fines were issued over a period of just two months.Do you think Malta needs more on-the-spot enforcement?•
