The Civil Protection Department has issued a warning about changing sea conditions after five people were involved in four separate drowning incidents around the Maltese islands on Wednesday.Thankfully, none of the five incidents resulted in a fatality, with emergency medical teams from Mater Dei Hospital responding alongside the CPD where required. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Members of the public also stepped in to provide assistance in some of the incidents.The CPD said Wednesday’s rescues should serve as a clear warning about how quickly conditions at sea can become dangerous, particularly as the weather begins to change.“Rough seas, strong currents and sudden changes in conditions should never be underestimated,” the department warned.It said visitors to Malta should be particularly cautious if they are unfamiliar with the coastline, local sea conditions and the strength of the Mediterranean.The CPD is urging people to check weather and sea conditions before entering the water, avoid swimming when seas are rough or deteriorating, and follow warning flags and instructions from lifeguards and authorities.Children should also be kept under constant supervision when close to the sea.Anyone who spots a person in difficulty should immediately call 112 and should not attempt a rescue if doing so could put their own life or others in danger.“Wednesday had a fortunate outcome for five people, but it should serve as a serious warning to us all,” the CPD said.“Respect the sea, know your limits and never take unnecessary risks.”Photos via Civil Protection Malta •
