Households affected by lengthy power cuts during this summer’s heatwaves are set to receive payments of up to €110, the government has announced.The ex-gratia payment scheme will apply to residential consumers who experienced a cumulative total of at least six hours without electricity during July and August 2026.Eligible households identified through Enemalta’s systems will not need to apply, with the payment automatically appearing as a credit on their electricity bill.The amount will depend on the cumulative duration of the interruptions:Between six and eight hours: €60Over eight and up to 12 hours: €70Over 12 and up to 24 hours: €80Over 24 and up to 36 hours: €90Over 36 and up to 48 hours: €100Over 48 hours: €110The credit will appear on bills under “Pagament ex gratia / Ex-Gratia Payment”.Anyone who believes they qualify but does not receive the payment automatically will be able to submit an application through Enemalta’s dedicated online portal between 1st October 2026 and 31st January 2027.Non-residential consumers affected by interruptions during the same period will have a separate application process administered through Malta Enterprise.The scheme follows electricity supply interruptions experienced during July and August, when exceptionally high temperatures coincided with increased demand on Malta’s electricity network.Enemalta said it is continuing to invest in strengthening and modernising the distribution network to improve its resilience during extreme weather and periods of peak demand.Were you affected by power cuts this summer?Photo credit: Tvm News•
