Indianapolis’ push to land a Major League Soccer team appears to be heating back up.Indianapolis city officials met with MLS executives last week, and Mayor Joe Hogsett pitched an undisclosed site near Lucas Oil Stadium for a new soccer-specific venue.Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett met with MLS executives last week over a possible expansion teamGetty“Last week, I had the opportunity to visit with Commissioner Don Garber and MLS leadership,” Hogsett said in a statement.“Given Major League Soccer‘s continued growth as a league, and soccer’s growth as a sport, I remain committed to doing everything in my power to position Indianapolis for success.“In the coming weeks and months, I will be presenting both the MLS, state and local partners with a path forward.”They are expected to call the site a ‘Football Stadium District’, which would position the soccer-stadium near Lucas Oil Stadium as part of a larger mixed-use development.Lucas Oil Stadium, home to the NFL‘s Indianapolis Colts, opened it’s doors in 2008, and has an early-exit clause for 2032 in it’s contract.In May 2023, the Indy Eleven announced it’s plans to build a 20,000 seat stadium and mixed-use development just west of Lucas Oil Stadium.This massive investment was all aimed at attracting the Major League franchise to Indianapolis. Ground was broken on the $1.5bn project, but it was quickly stopped after human remains were discovered at the site.
