Music veteran Viboyo Oweyo has named his five all-time favourite Ugandan musicians, highlighting artists whose music, creativity and impact have stood out to him over the years.Speaking on a podcast hosted by Baboon Forest, Viboyo was asked to select his top five Ugandan artists of all time. His list featured legendary figures from different generations of Ugandan music.Philly LutaayaViboyo placed the late Philly Lutaaya among his top picks, praising the quality and sound of his music.“Because he sold records and if you’re to listen to music, the sound of music then, I think he was the only Ugandan with that sound. Listen to a Philly Lutaaya song now and you’ll understand, the sound is crisp,” he said.Jose ChameleoneViboyo also gave flowers to Jose Chameleone, pointing to his popularity across East Africa.“That dawg needs respect also. Tanzanians fight for Chameleone, they even want him to be theirs. I think he’s the most busy East African within East Africa,” he said.Madoxx SematimbaMadoxx Sematimba was another name on Viboyo’s list. He said he had heard from people who were in Sweden at the time that Madoxx recorded far more music than the public knows.“I have been lucky enough to be told about his story by people who were in Sweden then and they told me Madoxx recorded more music than we know. He’s sitting on music he recorded years ago and that if he ever released, it’ll blow us up,” Viboyo explained.Dokta Brain’s top picks among Ugandan songwritersMowzey RadioViboyo included his former collaborator Mowzey Radio, praising his creativity and lyricism.“He was a great artist, not just because I worked with him but if you listen to his music, his creativity, his lyricism… Radio was a person that we should all appreciate,” he said.Herman BasuddeRounding off his list was the late kadongo kamu star Herman Basudde, whose songwriting Viboyo described as deep and comparable to the work of a hip-hop artist.“His music is deep. Actually he used to write like a rapper, like a HipHop artist. I listen to a lot of his songs but one of the songs that stand out is ‘Ebiyita Ekiro,’” he said. @baboonforestent Viboyo Names His All-Time Ugandan Musicians.
