Zach Kregger became a Hollywood darling after leaving his career as a comedic TV actor to make Barbarian (2022) and Weapons (2025), both of which have become horror classics. So, naturally, everyone had high hopes for his adaptation of the Resident Evil video games. Rather than using fan favourites like Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield, Kregger’s film follows an unknown character; a medical courier whose night takes a terrifying turn. The film has been well received so far (96 per cent critic rating and 90 per cent audience score). Critics have praised the breakneck pace, unexpected humour, visceral action, and stomach-churning tension. Kregger has made it clear that Resident Evil is his last franchise film. Apparently, the criticism from Resident Evil fans who hate the fact that his film differs from their picture of what the video game should look like in a live-action setting, was more than he could take. From now on, he only wants to create original films.
