Edited Press ReleaseBob Duncan, the long-time head starter at the tracks of the New York Racing Association (NYRA), will headline an educational seminar during the annual general membership meeting of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB) on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion on the grounds of the Fasig-Tipton sales complex in Saratoga Springs.The event, which features a dinner and cocktail hour for registered attendees, runs from 5-8 p.m. Attendance is free for NYTB members and $75 for nonmembers. All are encouraged to RSVP by Friday, Oct. 9 at nytbreeders.org/events.The educational seminar wil focus on horse behavior and features Duncan, whose approach to working with horses transformed starting gate practices. A recorded talk with Duncan at the starting gate at the Oklahoma training track will be shown at the seminar, followed by a Q&A sesssion. He will discuss how understanding equine behavior can help handlers build trust, prepare horses for the gate, and create a calmer, safer experience for horses and people.Duncan began working at NYRA tracks in the late 1960s and became head starter in 1993, serving in that role until his retirement in 2004.He continued to consult for NYRA and private racing stables, and his methods drew attention from horsemen in the United States and abroad. In January 2026, he received a Special Eclipse Award for Career Excellence in recognition of his contributions to horsemanship and the starting gate.The seminar will follow NYTB's annual general membership meeting, with a cocktail hour and food afterward.
