Tottenham Hotspur and Roberto De Zerbi have been coming under immense criticism for their poor start to the season, but one Spurs legend is calling for calm. Before the start of the season, some pundits were tipping Spurs for a top-four finish, but all that optimism has now vanished, with the Lilywhites rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after eight matches. In fact, Opta’s Supercomputer now gives Tottenham a 30 per cent chance of being relegated this season, making them the third favourites for the drop. Some pundits such as Chris Sutton have suggested that De Zerbi’s position may come under scrutiny.Sutton said following Tottenham’s loss to Villa: “It is a massive worry for Tottenham fans. I just think, you know, when are we going to start talking about Roberto De Zerbi, the manager?“You can say he kept them up last season, but they have spent north of £300 million, and you would expect them to be in better shape than they are right now. We have heard all the excuses, you know, not fit enough, lack of physicality, you know, blaming pre‑season.”Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramChris Hughton is confident that Roberto De Zerbi will turn Tottenham aroundChris Hughton, who was recently inducted into Tottenham’s Hall of Fame, believes that it is too early for Spurs fans to be fearing the worst or questioning De Zerbi’s role. The former Spurs defender and assistant coach believes that the club have the right man in place and has recruited well this summer. He is very confident that results are going to improve.Hughton said (via Football.London): “For where we are at the moment, we’re five games into the season, and I think for some it’s disappointing, which is normal. We’re now in a media-driven game. The reactions are there on so many outlets and so on, managers this, managers that, teams this, teams that. But we have to take stock, we are five games into the season.“What the club have at this particular moment is, in De Zerbi, a very good coach that’s thought very well of. And I genuinely feel that the players that have been brought in are good players. I think it’s a good level of players. And of course, only time will tell on each of these individuals, but I think the club have bought well.“What the club have done is bought over a shorter period of time. So in perhaps other windows where this would have been spread out over a lot longer period of time, or even a couple of windows, what you’ve got is a club that, I think, particularly because of last season and the desperation of going to the last game of the season, was a conscious effort that that’s not going to happen, and bring these players in quickly.“Sometimes it clicks straight away, sometimes it takes time. So I’m very confident that there will be a turnaround. You also understand that it’s emotions; supporters want to see things now, but I’m very confident that things will improve.”Hughton is hopeful of seeing the best of one Spurs full-back this seasonThe 67-year-old also spoke glowingly of the options that De Zerbi has at left-back, suggesting that he has two different profiles in Destiny Udogie and Andy Robinson.Hughton admitted that he feels sorry for Udogie due to his fitness troubles over recent years and is hopeful that we will see the best of the Italian this term if he can stay injury-free.He added: “What you want in each position is different types of players. Over the last couple of seasons I’ve felt a little bit for [Destiny] Udogie. In that position, I look at him – he’s quick, he’s a good size, he’s strong, he’s got a good left foot,” said the former Newcastle boss.“So I think there’s all the ingredients of a very good left-back. He’s been interrupted by injury, so I don’t think that has helped him. Hopefully, if he has a relatively injury-free season, then we can start seeing perhaps the best of him. And in [Andy] Robertson, you know what you’re going to get. He’s an experienced player.“Is he what he was five years ago? Well, not only five, six, seven years ago, or four years ago, he was playing in a very, very good team. A very, very good Liverpool team that won the league and that can carry you. So now he’s perhaps got a little bit more responsibility here. He’s come to a club that is different and we’re in different places to where he’s been the last few seasons with success and everything. So there’s a different type of responsibility on him, but he’s a good player, generally fit and a really good asset to the club.”READ MORE: ‘It was always Tottenham’ – Andy Robertson reveals why he supported Spurs last seasonThe post Tottenham legend urges club not to fall into ‘media-driven’ trap amid left-back silver lining appeared first on Spurs Web.
