Jeremiah St. Juste has made an excellent start to the season with Feyenoord. After spells at FSV Mainz 05 and Sporting Portugal, the defender returned to De Kuip, but it was a close call – St. Juste could easily have ended up playing for Bayern Munich. Injuries prevented St. Juste from making a major move. ‘I was indeed on the verge of a number of high-profile transfers that ultimately fell through. After Feyenoord, I moved to FSV Mainz 05, and I developed so well there that a move to one of those clubs became a very real possibility on several occasions.’ ‘I was so close, and then I dislocated my shoulder. I had surgery on both shoulders that year, as it was necessary. I’ve never had any problems since, but there was no transfer either. Bayern were honest: “We can’t afford it now.”’ St. Juste still sometimes thinks about that missed opportunity to join a top club. ‘Of course, the “what if” question does cross my mind from time to time. What if I had gone to Bayern or Dortmund after all? I was on the preliminary squad for the 2021 European Championship under Frank de Boer. I didn’t play, mind you, but I was selected.’ ‘I later played in the Champions League with Sporting too, just like Bayern and Dortmund. We beat teams like Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, but hardly anyone in the Netherlands noticed.
