Neighbouring Sicily just got hit with a double whammy overnight, as a violent storm around the same time as ongoing volcanic activity on Etna brought a grinding halt to Catania airport.In footage sent to Lovin Malta this morning, crowds of people could be seen being escorted outside of the airport as Sicily’s flights were instead directed west to Trapani.This morning, 10 flights were already diverted because of the storm, with the rest now being suspended until 4pm because of Etna. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Etna’s northeastern crater had already been producing an eruption cloud a whopping four kilometres high, with a VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) Red Alert – the fourth and highest alert level – being issued.However, an overnight storm which hit Catania (and just about grazed Malta) paralysed the historic centre in the early hours of the morning with a “water bomb”… made only worse as manholes and drains were blocked by the volcanic ash. By sunrise, Via Etnea had reportedly been turned into “a raging river of water and mud”.
