A young Honey Buzzard has died after allegedly being shot while flying over Delimara during its first migration journey, according to the Malta Ranger Unit. The group said the juvenile bird had left its nest in northern Europe this summer and was passing over Delimara when it was allegedly targeted by a poacher.According to the rangers, the person responsible failed to retrieve the bird after it landed close to the water’s edge. A member of the public instead found it and alerted the Malta Ranger Unit, but the bird died shortly afterwards. The rangers said the bird had several pellet wounds across its body and head, while one of its wings was completely shattered. The Environmental Protection Unit was called to the scene and took the bird to government veterinary authorities so that its cause of death could be officially established. The Malta Ranger Unit described the incident as another example of Malta’s poaching problem, while also criticising Environment Minister Miriam Dalli over what it described as loopholes and inadequate enforcement. The group thanked EPU officers, BirdLife Malta, the Committee Against Bird Slaughter and the member of the public who reported the bird.Photos: Malta Ranger Unit•
