A new dedicated helpline has been launched in Malta to support people affected by image-based sexual abuse, including so-called “revenge porn”.The new 1779 helpline will provide confidential and non-judgemental support to people whose intimate images have been shared, or threatened to be shared, without their consent.The service will offer emotional support, safety-focused guidance and information about the options available to victims, while helping them identify practical steps they can take.Details of the new service were announced on Tuesday morning by Social Policy and Family Minister Michael Falzon, who highlighted the lasting impact this form of abuse can have on victims.“These images take only a few seconds to share, but their consequences remain with that person throughout their life,” Falzon said.He encouraged anyone affected to overcome their fear of seeking help and come forward to receive the support they need.The launch also highlighted some of the reasons victims may be reluctant to seek assistance, including fears of being blamed or judged, concerns that they will not be believed, and fears that reporting the abuse could lead to the images being shared even further.Foundation for Social Welfare Services CEO Alfred Grixti said callers to 1779 will receive confidential and non-judgemental assistance, emotional support, safety guidance and information about the options available to them.Callers can also receive help identifying practical next steps and, where necessary, be referred or guided towards other relevant services.The helpline aims to ensure that people experiencing image-based sexual abuse do not have to navigate moments of fear, uncertainty or crisis alone.Photos via: DOI/FSWS•
