Evergreen Cabo Spirit (Pioneerof the Nile) went right to the lead and refused to be run down late, taking the GII City of Hope Mile with a gate-to-wire effort and stamping his plane ticket to Keeneland in the fall for the World Championships.Out well and immediately taking the lead, Cabo Spirit was joined by King of Gosford (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) as that one tracked in second in a compact group and the fractions sailed by in :23.47, :46.91, and six panels in 1:10.36. Placings largely went unchanged until the final bend when runners closed ranks and El Potente (Temple City) loomed on the fence as the oncoming danger by midstretch.Battling back gamely as the other 7-year-old tried to overtake him late, Cabo Spirit refused to be denied and just got his head down to win the photo.
