England’s Anthony Gordon has claimed that he’d rather lose in the way England lost to Spain than in a ‘cowardly’ way.The Three Lions kicked off their Nations League campaign with a 3-2 defeat on home soil, but it was an entertaining match.England have now lost back-to-back competitive gamesGettyIt was the first time the Three Lions had played since that infamous World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.Gordon had put England 1-0 up, but as the game went on, Thomas Tuchel‘s side sat deeper and deeper with more and more defenders being thrown on.In the end, they lost 2-1 and went out with a whimper. It was another defeat for England, which came against the eventual winners of the tournament but Gordon was satisfied with the approach from the Three Lions for this game. Asked if he felt England at least played without a fear of losing, Gordon told talkSPORT: “I don’t think we did that at all, which I am very proud of. After the summer and all the controversy and everything people have spoken about.“We lost a game against the best team in the world. It was 3-2. It was very entertaining, and I would rather lose this way.“I would rather lose through a mistake than retreating. I don’t want to feel like a coward on the pitch.“I don’t feel like a coward tonight. I feel proud of our performance. We just lost the game.“But we didn’t retreat, we went for it.”Gordon’s comments were subsequently put to England boss Thomas Tuchel, and he responded: “I don’t really know what that means… in the end, we have to say we made too many mistakes and were not clinical enough in the decisive moments. But we played our way and it worked in phases of the game.”Gordon has now got five England goals and is locking down that left wing spotGettyWhat did Gordon mean?Gordon was directly referencing the defeat to Argentina in the World Cup, a game for which Tuchel has received heavy criticism for his tactics and changes. But it was different at Wembley on Saturday evening, with Gordon outlining his pride at England going after the world and European champions. He added: “I feel like we did everything people wanted us to do, and what we’ve asked of ourselves.“Plenty of positives. I felt like we went for the throat, and at 2-1, we get the penalty, but that was a massive momentum shift.“Ultimately, if you make the mistakes we did when playing out, a team like that are always going to punish you.“I felt like they were on the back foot, and we really went for them.Harry Kane’s missed penalty was his first for England since the 2022 World Cup quarter-final against FranceGetty“H [Kane] is probably the best penalty taker in football, and he slips, so you have to take that on the chin.“And at 3-2, it’s so hard to get the ball back off them. They are the best in the world at controlling possession when they have a lead.”What happened in the game?Spain arrived at Wembley having only conceded one goal across the whole World Cup.And it took just 95 seconds for them to gain the lead as Marc Guehi twisted and turned himself into knots, allowing Lamine Yamal to pinch his pocket and find the net via the far post.Spain could have been 3-0 up as Ferran Torres missed a one-on-on and saw James Trafford make a good save to deny him before England equalised. It came via a rapid counter-attack, starting with Elliot Anderson playing a pass into Gordon, who delicately flicked it around the corner for Jude Bellingham.Kane’s missed penalty swung the momentum of the game and England couldn’t regain controlGettyBellingham returned the favour and played Gordon in on goal, and he fired it under Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon. The game was turned around moments later as Nico O’Reilly crossed for Harry Kane and his header looked easy for Simon to deal with.Marc Cucurella raised his thigh, and the ball diverted into the net off his leg to leave England in the lead at half time. The hosts started the second half brilliantly and won a penalty as Rodri tripped Bellingham in the box.Kane stepped up, slipped, double touched the ball, and it hit the crossbar.Spain made it 2-2 shortly after O’Reilly lost possession at left-back, regained it, and then passed the ball straight to Dani Olmo.He couldn’t believe his luck as he rolled a pass to Alex Baena on the edge of the area, who curled home. And Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner following a delightful move that saw Baena slip a pass into the striker, who chipped Trafford to seal the win.England piled the pressure on at the end but created no further clear chances.Their next outing sees them face Czechia in Prague on Tuesday night, live on talkSPORT, kick-off 7:45pm.
