The defender can play as a left‑back, centre‑back, left midfielder, right midfielder and even as a winger.But Spurs were not alone in their pursuit, with Newcastle United, Everton and Fulham also looking at Aramburu during the summer as interest in his services continued to grow.Spurs’ full‑back search hints at wider squad concernsThe profile of the player would not surprise many Lilywhites fans, as he is not too dissimilar from Djed Spence, whom Tottenham sold to Inter Milan.The two are very alike in terms of versatility, with Spence capable of filling in similar positions to Aramburu.Spurs were also linked with Neco Williams of Nottingham Forest, who is equally versatile, further hinting that Tottenham were keen on adding more depth to the full‑back position.However, Spurs did bring in Tosin Adarabioyo for £12 million, and while he is capable of playing at right‑back, his signing was more in response to Kevin Danso’s loan departure to Sunderland.Now, more Premier League heavyweights have entered the race for Aramburu, with Liverpool and Manchester City monitoring the 24‑year‑old.Why Jon Aramburu would have made sense for TottenhamTottenham’s reported interest in Aramburu becomes easier to understand when looking beyond his positional versatility.The Venezuelan was a regular for Real Sociedad last season, making 35 La Liga appearances and starting 31 of them. He therefore would not have arrived simply as cover for Pedro Porro, but as a player already accustomed to playing regular top-flight football in Spain.What makes the profile particularly interesting for Spurs is that Aramburu appears to offer a different type of full-back to Porro.Porro’s biggest strengths come when Tottenham have possession and he is given opportunities to contribute in advanced areas, whereas Aramburu has built more of his reputation around defensive aggression and one-vs-one work. That could have given Roberto De Zerbi greater tactical flexibility depending on the opposition, rather than simply having two similar options competing for the same position.The need for another recognised right-back has also been highlighted by Porro’s fitness problems.The Spaniard had only just returned to the starting XI against Aston Villa after missing the previous two matches with a muscular issue when he was forced off after just 19 minutes. De Zerbi subsequently revealed that the latest problem appeared to be his hamstring.Archie Gray replaced Porro against Villa, but once again that meant asking a midfielder to fill in at right-back rather than turning to a natural specialist.
