Former Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda has revealed the best player he ever played alongside, the best manager he worked under, and the best trainer from his time in north London.Pascal Chimbonda is one of the few players to have had a brief stint in north London with Tottenham Hotspur during his career.The defender first joined Spurs from Wigan Athletic on 31 August 2006 and stayed for under two years before departing for Sunderland on 26 July 2008. In a recent interview with The Mixer, the former centre-back named some of the standout players and managers he has worked with or faced.When asked about the best player he has played with, he answered simply: “Berbatov.” For the toughest opponent he ever faced, he named “Thierry Henry.”On managers, Chimbonda chose “Martin Jol” as the best he has worked under, while highlighting Robbie Keane as the finest leader he played alongside.He picked Jermain Defoe as the best trainer, and Cristiano Ronaldo as the most formidable winger he has ever come up against.As for his favourite footballing memory, Chimbonda pointed to Tottenham’s 2008 Carling Cup triumph over Chelsea.The defender started against Chelsea but was withdrawn after 61 minutes when manager Juande Ramos made a tactical change, replacing him with midfielder Tom Huddlestone. Furious at being taken off, Chimbonda stormed straight down the tunnel to the dressing room instead of taking his place on the bench. He also took an infamously long time to leave the pitch while Spurs were chasing the game, frustrating fans and staff alike.Tottenham went on to win the match 2–1 in extra time. Although Chimbonda joined in the post‑match celebrations and later apologised to his teammates, the club fined him two weeks’ wages for his behaviour.Spurs hope to recreate iconic memories from 2008-09Tottenham have undergone many changes since Chimbonda last played for them, with the Lilywhites once challenging for the Premier League title in 2016-17 and even reaching a UEFA Champions League final in 2019.In recent seasons, however, Spurs have struggled domestically, finishing 17th in consecutive campaigns. Last season was one of their worst in the league, as they came close to losing their top-flight status.This campaign has not started well either, with Tottenham sitting 20th after five games – a similar position to where Chimbonda found himself in 2008-09.Back then, Spurs were able to clinch silverware, and the hope is that Roberto De Zerbi’s side can follow in those footsteps this season. Tottenham are already out of the Carabao Cup, but they remain in the FA Cup, which realistically stands as their only route to silverware.
