When she rejected him, Caldwell snapped at a young female staffer, telling her: “You young women are looking for young sperm”. Investigators found his defense completely uncredible and ruled that his conduct was derogatory, demeaning, and constituted sexual harassment.Cronyism & Favorites: Caldwell admitted to investigators that he repeatedly attempted to secure job promotions for a state employee with whom he was secretly having a romantic relationship without disclosing the conflict of interest.Free Passes & Freebies: He routinely brought unauthorized personal dates and guests to ticketed events on the taxpayer or sponsor’s dime.Sherill wrote on X:“Today, I’m announcing the conclusion and findings of an independent investigation into allegations regarding Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell. The investigation found that the Lieutenant Governor engaged in serious, repeated violations of state policy and failed to uphold the responsibilities of his office. I’m calling for his resignation and giving him until tomorrow to do so.I hold everyone in my Administration to the highest ethical standard. We all have a duty to follow our state ethics and harassment policy and our Code of Conduct. Anyone who violates these will be held accountable.These violations substantiated in the investigation reflect a pattern of behavior that does not meet the standards of this Administration. The ethical lapses persisted despite multiple warnings and trainings. The substantiated finding of sexual harassment is extremely troubling. I’ve seen firsthand how a hostile culture can undermine everyone’s ability to succeed. It’s insidious and ruptures the trust within an organization.Leaders have an obligation to make sure everyone in an organization is bought into the mission and able to succeed. I take that responsibility incredibly seriously. The inquiry began just four months later. For weeks after the Globe broke the story, the governor’s office would not even confirm an investigation existed.When she finally spoke in early September, she talked in generalities and did not name him. Meanwhile Caldwell kept serving as secretary of state, New Jersey’s chief elections officer, and as acting governor whenever Sherrill left the state.Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio said she owed the public answers in real time: what she knew about the warnings, when she knew it, and why Caldwell stayed in office while the probe dragged on.New Jersey Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia also tore into Sherrill over her handling of the scandal, writing:Gov. Sherrill can dream about the White House on her own time. But traipsing around the country campaigning for Democrats while Dale Caldwell repeatedly took charge of NJ?Caldwell’s staff was trying to manage his conduct toward women while Sherrill was “on tour”. Ex: At an official event, he asked whether a staffer’s younger friend was single & sought her phone number. After being told she wasn’t interested, he told the staffer that successful young women were looking for “young sperm.” Investigators substantiated sexual harassment. They also found that he brought personal guests to ticketed events without paying and pushed for a promotion for a woman he was dating, without disclosing their relationship. He sent that promotion email four days after being notified he was under investigation.Senior officials raised concerns about his conduct toward women in March (he was warned directly on March 25). Taxpayers were then billed nearly $50K through June 25 for an investigation charging $450 an hour for attorney time. While it was underway, Caldwell served as acting governor EIGHTEEN TIMES.These are substantiated workplace and ethics violations, not criminal convictions. Sherrill can’t fire an elected lieutenant governor, but she can demand his resignation. If he refuses, the Assembly can pursue impeachment and the Senate can vote on removal.The legal bill was dumped on us, but the responsibility for leaving him in charge belongs with Madam Governor.
