Cavan Sullivan’s wait is over.The 16-year-old made his U.S. Men’s National Team debut on Saturday as Mauricio Pochettino’s squad defeated Peru 4-1 in friendly action. Sullivan became the second-youngest player in program history to feature for the USMNT, sitting just behind Freddy Adu on that list. Pochettino rewarded Sullivan with a start at Inter.co Stadium and the Philadelphia Union attacker played 62 minutes. He received a yellow card in the first half after a collision with Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese following a play in the box. Sullivan also completed 89% of his passes (25/28), created two offensive chances, and had one shot blocked. Although two of Sullivan’s fellow debutants, Julian Hall and Justin Ellis, scored goals in the match, he was one of 11 players to earn their USMNT debuts. “I’ve dreamed of this day my entire life and it was an incredible honor to be out there and to represent my country,” Sullivan told TNT Sports after the game. “I’m trying to learn every day and get better and better and do more and learn from the older guys and cherish every moment.“Josh, Julian, Mathis [Albert], I came up with a lot of them on youth national team, so I’m super proud of them and glad to be out there playing with them,” he added. Sullivan has delivered a sensational season for the Union, scoring seven goals and registering 12 assists in all competition. The Union homegrown has helped Ryan Richter’s squad post an unbeaten record in MLS play since the World Cup break, climbing back into the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Pochettino could potentially go with Sullivan again in the starting lineup on Tuesday when the USMNT continues their September-October window against Chile in St. Louis, Missouri.
