Afrigo Band co-founder and veteran musician Moses Matovu’s death stemmed from a confrontation involving his girlfriend Rose Tumusiime and her former boyfriend, the police have said. Matovu was assaulted in Kibuli, Kampala, at about 5.30 am today, Thursday, sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider but later died while receiving treatment.Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said Tumusiime, who was with Matovu at the time of the incident, had been arrested and was assisting detectives with investigations.“Following the arrest of the female who was in the company of the deceased, preliminary information indicates that the incident may have arisen from a physical altercation,” Kawala said.She said the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Matovu’s death had not yet been fully established.Police identified the main male suspect as a private security guard who was previously in a relationship with Tumusiime. The suspect, according to police, fled the scene and is being pursued. Residents of the area claimed Tumusiime is a renowned sex worker. “The male suspect has been positively identified and is believed to have fled the scene,” Kawala said. “Police are actively pursuing him to facilitate his arrest and assist in establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”Matovu was one of the founding members of Afrigo Band, one of Uganda’s longest-running musical groups, and was widely known for his contribution to the country’s live music scene.The circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death echo those of other prominent Ugandans whose lives have ended in similarly tragic circumstances, as aptly captured by veteran journalist and media trainer, Wilson Akiiki Kaija. 1.
