Purdy is once again proving his critics wrongGettyThe viral play-by-play commentator made his case during the latest episode of Inside the NFL, claiming that the San Francisco 49ers signal caller is vastly underrated – even disrespected – by many and that he should be mentioned in the same conversation as current leading MVP favorite, Josh Allen. “I understand people who think Josh Allen is the best quarterback in the NFL through the first two weeks of the season. Five touchdowns a game over two games. They’ve been in shootouts, so that’s been a necessity of the game as part of it,” Gavin said. “But if you want to talk about efficiency. If you want to talk about dots. If you want to talk about a guy who’s been getting out of the pocket, making tight-window throws. “And you wanna talk about a guy who’s just been consistently disrespected in the NFL, the 1a to Josh Allen, so far this season, and for me, top-2 quarterback in the NFL this year, arguably, considering they’ve faced the Rams as well, potentially No. 1 in that conversation is Brock Purdy.”Purdy’s ascension since being drafted with the 262nd – and final – pick on the 2022 NFL Draft has been nothing short of remarkable. Despite being named the Niners’ third-string quarterback in his rookie season, behind Trey Lance and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy was forced into action when both went down with injury, going 5-0 in five starts before leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship game.The following season, after having earned the starting role due to his impressive cameo the year prior, Purdy led a 12-5 San Francisco all the way to the Super Bowl, though they would narrowly lose to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. “I’m torn so much between the Brock Purdy that is the great underdog, the last pick in the draft, the guy that everyone underestimates and just proves time and time again that he is absolutely elite,” Gavin continued. “But I am getting to the point now, where in season five, as he’s approaching that 1,500 career completion mark that gets you a career QBR rating, and he’s going to come in that, and he’s going to be top five all-time in that category. …“I think people finally around the NFL are giving respect to Brock Purdy, and yet some people still wanna sit in my mentions and tell me he’s not a top-10 guy, that it’s all system, it’s all [head coach Kyle] Shanahan, it’s all the ‘Avengers’ around him.”Aside from Josh Allen, Gavin argues that Purdy is right up there in the conversation for being the best QB in the NFLGettyPurdy was one drop shy of recording a perfect 100 QBR vs the DolphinsGettyBut the numbers don’t lie. Purdy aiming for NFL historyOnly just beginning the fifth year of his career – and currently ranked sixth in talkSPORT’s QB rankings list – the 27-year-old has already completed 68.4 percent of his 1,409 pass attempts for 12,177 yards and 89 touchdowns to just 38 interceptions. This is the highest completion percentage by a quarterback in their first 50 games in NFL history, and helped him secure a monster five-year, $265 million contract extension in 2025. Should Purdy continue on his current trajectory, needing just under 100 more pass attempts to qualify for the all-time career passer rating and efficiency records, he would rank No. 1 all-time with a current passer rating of 104.9. This would eclipse Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson, who is currently the all-time leader with a 102.2 rating, with 21-year veteran Aaron Rodgers following closely behind (101.9 rating). “Brock Purdy is an elite quarterback and deserves to be talked about as a top-five guy in the NFL,” Gavin further argued when questioned over whether Matthew Stafford should be ranked above him.Gavin currently has just three QBs ahead of Purdy, including Mahomes (L)Getty“Josh Allen. But his sheer consistency over the course of his young career to date suggests otherwise. “I’m saying that at 27-years-old, going into his prime and playing the way he’s playing.
