Record spending on transfers and agents’ fees this summer, with similar inflationary rises in player wages, has caused some owners — including from English clubs — to question whether a flat squad salary cap can be introduced as happens in some rugby union competitions, even in EU countries. Club sources have told The Times that the issue was raised at the European Football Clubs (EFC) board meeting in Monaco three weeks ago. Some clubs want the EFC to instruct lawyers to see what capping measures might be possible, though that has yet to materialise — the EFC is still waiting to see the outcome of an European Court of Justice case around the proposed capping of agents’ fees. One source said: “Most of the money is going to players and agents and it is just going up and up.
