PAC members grilling the Ministry of Internal Affairs officials The Committee on Public Accounts – Central Government has questioned the legality of decisions taken by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in registering and supervising Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) without a formally constituted oversight committee.The Committee noted that since the rationalisation of the NGO Bureau in 2024, the Ministry has failed to establish the committee mandated to register and supervise NGOs.Chairperson Hon. Patrick Oshabe said the prolonged delay had attracted complaints from NGOs, with some alleging that the absence of the committee was being used to restrict their operations.“I have received several complaints and a petition that you are using the absence of the committee to silence people in the NGO world,” Oshabe said.He asked the Ministry to clarify whether some officials were deliberately delaying the process for personal gain, as alleged in a petition presented to the committee.MPs also tasked the Ministry to disclose the officials currently responsible for registering and supervising NGOs in the absence of the oversight committee.Ministry officials led by Under Secretary Ms. Dorothy Nsereko attributed the delay to changes in the Ministry’s political leadership and said the committee will be constituted before the end of the year.The post PAC Queries Illegal NGO Registration as Internal Affairs Operates Without Oversight Committee Since 2024 appeared first on Business Focus.
