The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has condemned an alleged threat made against a newsroom editor over the publication of a court report.According to IĠM, a relative of a person mentioned in the court report contacted the editor and demanded that the article be removed from the news portal.The institute said the person then went further, allegedly threatening to personally find the journalist at his home.A police report has since been filed, with IĠM saying action will be taken against the person who allegedly made the threat. It also thanked police for their swift response.“This behaviour is not on,” IĠM said, stressing that while court reporting can be sensitive, having a loved one involved in proceedings does not give anyone the right to threaten journalists or editors.The institute defended the importance of court reporting in ensuring transparency in Malta’s judicial process, while noting that anyone who believes a case has been inaccurately reported can contact the newsroom concerned without resorting to threats.“Journalists care about getting the facts right. If they’ve gotten a fact wrong, they will listen to you,” IĠM said.•
