European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has celebrated Victoria’s selection as Malta’s European Capital of Culture for 2031, describing it as “beautiful news” for the city and Gozo as a whole. In a social media post following today’s announcement, Metsola said the title represents much more than a year of celebrations, pointing towards new opportunities for young Gozitans and Maltese, greater space for artists and Gozitan culture, increased investment and greater international visibility for Gozo.“This is the impact of Europe in our communities: new opportunities, people coming together and ideas that make a difference,” she wrote.Metsola also congratulated Victoria Mayor Brian Azzopardi, Victoria 2031 Foundation Chair Samuel Azzopardi and everyone involved in making the bid a reality.Victoria was the only Maltese city to reach the final stage after being shortlisted ahead of Birgu in 2025, with the final selection meeting taking place today, 23rd September. What do you hope the European Capital of Culture title will bring to Gozo?•
