The Gozo Business Chamber has welcomed the selection of Victoria as Malta’s European Capital of Culture for 2031, describing the designation as a “fundamental step” for the island’s economic and social development.The announcement follows the final selection meeting held in Valletta today where Victoria was chosen for the 2031 title. Victoria had been shortlisted alongside Birgu at the pre-selection stage in November 2025, before becoming Malta’s sole candidate for the final selection.In a statement, the Gozo Business Chamber acknowledged the “consistent and considerable effort” made by those involved in the Victoria 2031 bid, saying it was pleased to have contributed through its representation on the Foundation’s Board of Governors and by providing a consultation platform when required.The Chamber described Victoria 2031 as an important opportunity for Gozo, saying the title can contribute to the island’s economic and social development in the coming years.It said Gozo’s cultural scene reflects the island’s “unique identity”, while Victoria 2031 can provide a platform to recognise the island’s changing realities and support an evolving cultural scene.The project is built around three central pillars — slowness, care and courage — with Victoria 2031 Foundation Chair Samuel Azzopardi previously explaining that the concept is intended to strengthen relationships within the community while encouraging openness to new ideas and change.The Chamber said it believes the project, with the support of Government, social partners and the Gozitan community, can provide a platform for an open exchange about Gozo’s community and identity.“Through culture we will acknowledge Gozo’s changing realities while paving the way to support an evolving cultural scene,” the Chamber said.Victoria will now represent Malta in the European Capital of Culture programme in 2031, alongside a city in Spain. The Spanish selection process is still underway.The designation also marks the continuation of efforts to use culture as a driver for wider development in Gozo. The Gozo Regional Development Strategy has previously identified the European Capital of Culture bid as an opportunity to promote Gozitan heritage and identity and support the island’s cultural development.•
