Shankar has been conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Geriatric Society of India (GSI) in recognition of his contribution to the growth and development of geriatric care in the country.The award was presented in absentia at the 39th annual conference of the GSI held in Kolkata from September 18 to 20.Dr. Shankar has played a significant role in creating awareness about the need to accord greater priority to geriatric care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he initiated an online three-month certificate course in Geriatrics and Gerontology. The course has since been conducted over six terms during the past six years.Dr. Shankar, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, has been associated with geriatric medicine and academic activities for several decades. The Geriatric Society of India had earlier honoured him at its convention in Belagavi in 2012.
