Bloodstock agent Alex Elliott has learned from some of the sharpest minds in the business, from his time with Christophe Clement to his more recent association with Anthony Ramsden and Valmont.He shares those influences, and the importance of patience and first impressions, with TDN's Gary King in the latest Words to Live By.TDN: Outside of your family, who has been the most important mentor in your career, and why?Alex Elliott: I worked for Christophe Clement for around 18 months after graduating from the Godolphin Flying Start, and anything you could absorb from that man was gold dust.His work ethic, horsemanship, attention to detail and ability to run a successful business while raising a family all left a lasting impression on me. He really had the lot.More recently, Anthony Ramsden of Valmont has had a huge influence on both my life and career. His judgement and ability to make the right call, often when it matters most, is, in my experience, unparalleled.TDN: What is the best piece of advice you've ever received, and who gave it to you?AE: My mother always drilled into me that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.I haven't always managed it, of course, but I think it's an invaluable saying.TDN: What advice would you give to a young person starting out in the Thoroughbred industry today?AE: Try and work for the absolute best, whatever field it may be. Never be afraid to ask questions, but in general keep your mouth closed and your eyes and ears open.Ambition is essential, but this is a long game played slowly.
