Magic Kingdom has lost another small piece of its past, though this time, there is still a chance the missing piece could eventually return.Guests walking through the Walt Disney World Railroad station on Main Street, U.S.A. may notice something different inside the historic-looking space. One of the vintage Penny Arcade machines that had been displayed there for years has been removed.The missing machine is a Mutoscope featuring Metropolis (1927), and its disappearance leaves only three of the machines currently in place, according to reports from WDWNT.Credit: Brittany DiCologero, Inside the MagicWhile this certainly isn’t the same kind of removal as losing an attraction or an entire section of the park, it’s another change longtime Magic Kingdom fans may notice.A Piece of Main Street History Is MissingThe story of these machines actually stretches back decades.Magic Kingdom once had a Main Street Penny Arcade, but that location closed in 1995. Rather than eliminating everything associated with it, Disney moved several machines, including Mutoscopes, into the nearby Walt Disney World Railroad station.For guests who aren’t familiar with them, Mutoscopes provide a flip-book-style way to watch old films. Instead of watching something on a modern screen, guests operate the machine and see a rapid sequence of images that creates the illusion of motion.Until recently, four of these machines could be found at the station.Now, only three remain: Car Train Bag, Way Down East, and The Cats in the Bag.The missing machine featured Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927). Cast Members reportedly did not know exactly when Disney removed it, although the machine had still been spotted roughly a week earlier.That makes this a very recent change.Disney Hasn’t Confirmed Whether the Removal Is PermanentThere is one important detail here before anyone assumes another piece of Magic Kingdom history has disappeared forever.Disney has not confirmed that the Metropolis (1927) Mutoscope has been permanently retired.In fact, there is some precedent for these machines temporarily disappearing.Other Mutoscopes have been removed from the station over the years for maintenance, including cleaning and repainting, before eventually returning. The Way Down East machine, for example, was previously absent from the collection.So, for now, this is best viewed as a confirmed removal from the Walt Disney World Railroad station rather than a confirmed permanent retirement.Still, its disappearance is worth watching.Magic Kingdom Keeps ChangingThe timing also makes the removal more noticeable.Magic Kingdom is already experiencing one of the largest periods of physical change in its history. Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat have all disappeared as Disney prepares the area for Piston Peak National Park.Elsewhere, work continues as Disney prepares for its future Villains-themed land.Against projects of that size, the disappearance of one vintage machine can seem insignificant. But the smaller details scattered throughout Magic Kingdom have always helped give the park its character.The Walt Disney World Railroad station isn’t simply somewhere guests board a train.
