SIG Sauer introduced the P385 at its SIG NEXT event on September 22. It is a new family of modular, striker-fired 9mm pistols. The lineup includes the P385-MACH3D, P385-COMP, P385-FULL, P385-CARRY, and P385-COMPACT.This is a separate pistol platform, not another P320 configuration. The P385 has its own serialized fire-control unit (FCU), along with interchangeable slides and barrels. SIG also gave it a low bore axis and a recoil-dampening system housed in the grip module.A New Fire-control Unit with Some P320 CompatibilityThe P385 uses standard P320 magazines. Older P320 magazines with the original rounded basepad will work, but SIG says the P385's metal magwell must be removed first. The P320 AXG magwell and P-Series dovetail sights are also compatible. Other P320 and P365 parts are not, and neither pistol's holsters will fit the P385. The new P385 line-up: P385-CARRY, P385-FULL, P385-COMP & P385-MACH3D SIG's MagStrap system changes the grip length, circumference, and trigger reach without requiring a different grip module. It does more than the usual small, medium, and large backstrap set. The same module can be changed from full-size to compact length.The new Trigger Block sits flush with the trigger face instead of protruding like a conventional trigger-safety tab. SIG describes it as a redundant drop-safety mechanism. That is a manufacturer claim, and the pistol has not been independently tested here. Models with and without a manual safety are listed. SIG P385-COMPACT (SIG Sauer) SIG's Recoil Dampening System, or SRDS, is built into the grip module. The company says it absorbs vibration and works with the low bore axis to reduce felt recoil and muzzle movement. The compensated models add another layer of recoil control, at least on paper.All five versions use the SIG-LOC PRO optic-mounting system. It accepts Trijicon RMR- and Leupold DeltaPoint Pro-pattern optics without an adapter plate. Base models are fitted with XRAY3 day/night sights. SIG P385-COMP (SIG Sauer) Carry and Comp lead the LaunchSIG lists the P385-CARRY and P385-COMP as new. The Full, Compact, and MACH3D are marked "coming soon."The Carry has a 4-inch barrel and measures 7.22 inches long. SIG lists its weight as 28.94 ounces with a magazine. Standard versions include one 17-round and one 21-round magazine. SIG P385-CARRY (SIG Sauer) The Comp has an integrally compensated slide and a 4-inch barrel. It is 7.9 inches long and weighs 29.12 ounces with a magazine. Standard versions ship with one 17-round and two 21-round magazines. The P385 checks the expected modern-pistol boxes, but the new grip and recoil systems are the parts worth watching.
