Eleven environmental and residents’ organisations have written to Prime Minister Robert Abela demanding the immediate removal of Planning Authority CEO Johann Buttigieg and an independent investigation into his conduct.In an urgent letter sent today, the organisations accused Buttigieg of conduct they described as corrupt, pointing to published conversations between him and Yorgen Fenech which they claim show the pair discussing projects, planning applications and business dealings.The organisations also raised concerns over reports that Buttigieg owns a private company operating within the planning sector while serving as CEO of the authority responsible for planning.“It should be abundantly clear that a person whose corrupt conduct has been exposed cannot continue to lead an authority of such fundamental importance to our country,” the organisations claimed in their letter.They are calling for Buttigieg to be removed from his position and prevented from holding any public office or consultancy role.The organisations also want a public and independent investigation into communications between Buttigieg and developers and other individuals where potential conflicts of interest may arise.They suggested this could be led by an independent authority such as the Auditor General, with any potential criminal offences referred for further investigation where warranted.Their third demand concerns new legislation requiring communications involving Planning Authority officials and other public authorities to take place exclusively through official channels. They are also calling for a public transparency register covering meetings between public officials and interested parties.The letter warns that the organisations could mobilise the public if action is not taken, arguing that greater integrity, transparency and accountability are urgently needed within Malta’s planning system.The letter was signed by BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, Friends of the Earth Malta, Front Żgħażagħ għall-Ambjent, Għawdix, Il-Kollettiv, Moviment Graffitti, Nature Trust Malta, Ramblers Association Malta and Wirt Għawdex.•
