Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool fans not to expect much more from Florian Wirtz.Wirtz moved to Anfield last summer in a deal worth £116.5million having caught the eye at Bayer Leverkusen.Carragher was scathing of Wirtz’s performance against BournemouthGettyThe 23-year-old, though, struggled in his opening year at Anfield, registering just five goals and three assists in Liverpool’s disastrous Premier League title defence. After a year of adjusting to the rigours of Premier League football, many expected more from the German this season. However, Wirtz is failing to live up to his price tag, with his sole goal involvement coming in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest last month.‘Nothing is happening’And his performance against Bournemouth on Sunday was heavily criticised by Carragher, who said following Liverpool’s 1-0 win over the Cherries: “Wirtz has been really poor again. It’s just nothing. Nothing is happening there at all.”“That was one of the poorest I’ve ever seen him in a Liverpool shirt,” Carragher continued on the Jamie Carragher Podcast.European football expert and talkSPORT regular Kevin Hatchard took to X to defend Wirtz, posting: “I have a lot of respect for Jamie, and have to accept that Wirtz’s performances for Liverpool have been nowhere near what he’s capable of, but to suggest this is his usual performance level simply isn’t true.“He was outstanding for Leverkusen and has 45 Germany caps at the age of 23.”Carragher, though, wasn’t having any of Hatchard’s defence of Wirtz, as the former Reds defender wrote: “Morning Kevin, I know he’s played a lot better in the Bundesliga as that’s pretty obvious when you see his numbers.“I’m talking about playing for Liverpool in the Premier League, I don’t think there is going to be a big up turn in performance that people are expecting.”Wirtz has registered just nine Premier League goal involvements since moving to Liverpool last summerGettyFormer Portsmouth and Newcastle United hitman Micky Quinn replied to Carragher pondering how Wirtz will perform under Jurgen Klopp for the Germany national team.“Hopefully Jurgen can sprinkle his stardust on him,” Carragher replied to the 64-year-old on X.‘He can’t be in the team’Liverpool’s win at Bournemouth saw the Merseysiders maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season. That record will be put to the test when they welcome Manchester City to Anfield in the first round of games following the extended international break. And Carragher believes that Wirtz shouldn’t be anywhere near the starting XI for the game against Enzo Maresca’s side.“Wirtz wouldn’t be in my Liverpool team. Manchester City at home, for me, he can’t be in the team,” the 48-year-old said.Carragher doesn’t want to see Wirtz in the Reds starting XI for the welcome of Man City next monthGetty“The things I’ve liked so far about Iraola, he’s had the courage to make big decisions. Ryan Gravenberch has just signed a hefty contract on a five-year deal on massive money, because they thought him and Szoboszlai were going to be the future of the midfield going forward. He’s not playing.“Now, I can imagine the guys at the top of the club looking at that, thinking we’ve just given him a hefty contract. But no, he’s not playing.“The full-back situation, he keeps changing the full-backs, he’s dropped Jeremie Frimpong straight away. Milos Kerkez has been in and out. So he’s made decisions.“But sooner or later he’s going to have to make a decision on Florian Wirtz, and, for me, I hope it’s sooner.“Not because I don’t like Florian Wirtz, I’m desperate for the kid to do well. I just want Liverpool to win. That’s it, basically.”talkSPORT verdictSpeaking on Gameday Live on Sunday for Liverpool’s win at Bournemouth, Troy Deeney picked up on Iraola’s frustration with Wirtz.“Florian Wirtz for me, it’s the first time I’ve seen him live,” Deeney began.“He just doesn’t look like he belongs in this league. What I mean by that is, he’s clearly talented, clearly he’s got the technical ability.“But it’s like he doesn’t believe he’s going to score and doesn’t believe he’s going to impact the game. Liverpool need more from him.Iraola wasn’t happy with Wirtz against Bournemouth on SundayGetty“The rest of the team are starting to disbelieve because every time it goes to him, the tempo slows down.“That means (Bradley) Barcola doesn’t get the ball quick, (Cody) Gakpo doesn’t get the ball quick, it allows Bournemouth to get back.“And when they get back, it slows the whole thing down. Iraola just in front of us was absolutely blowing his top.”
