One of the most popular trainers in the business, Brendan Walsh has also built a résumé that includes multiple Grade I winners, with the likes of Maxfield, Pretty Mischievous and Santin among the stars to have passed through his barn.The Irishman's path to the top has taken him from Kildangan Stud to Dubai to Newmarket and, ultimately, the United States, learning from some of the sport's most accomplished figures along the way.In the latest installment of Words to Live By, Walsh speaks with TDN's Gary King about those who helped shape his career, the work ethic instilled in him by his father and the advice he would give to the next generation.TDN: Outside of family, who has been the most important mentor in your career, and why?Brendan Walsh: There have been a lot of different people at various stages, so it would be difficult to name just one.Jimmy Lenehan, who ran Kildangan Stud and brought me to Dubai for the first time, was a great teacher who set a very high standard. Mark Wallace, who I was assistant to in Newmarket before I moved to the States, was another very good young trainer.Then, of course, there was Eddie Kenneally, who I was assistant to before I went out on my own. He ran a great operation and was a tremendous caregiver of horses.Those are just a few. I'd like to think I took something from a lot of people along the way.TDN: What is the best piece of advice you've ever received, and who gave it to you?BW: My father always instilled a great work ethic in all of us. He told us to work hard and give everything our best. Then, whether it went right or wrong, you could walk away with no regrets.TDN: What advice would you give to a young person starting out in the Thoroughbred industry today?BW: Work hard, be smart and try to work for people who you believe are the best.They don't necessarily have to be big names.
