Where Should I Take This Terrain System Next?

Wait 5 sec.

It's been a while since I've posted a proper development update here, so I wanted to show you where the project currently stands and, more importantly, get your thoughts on where it should go next. For anyone new here: I'm working on a modular 3D-printable tabletop terrain system built around three basic elements: Pillars — the structural elements that connect everything together. Walls — available in different sizes and configurations, allowing you to create anything from small sections to larger structures. Floor elements — which connect to the walls and pillars to create floors, platforms, and complete structures. The idea is that you can combine these basic components freely rather than being limited to predefined buildings. I've been using the system quite a lot recently, and I'm really happy with how quickly you can build structures while still having a lot of freedom in how they look. But now I'm at a point where I'm wondering: where should I take the system next? I've got a few ideas I've been thinking about for a while: 1. Foldable terrain One idea is to create a foldable version of the system. The advantage would be obvious: you could put an entire structure on the table very quickly. The downside is that you'd lose the modularity and freedom of the current system. Instead of building the structure yourself, you'd essentially have a predefined layout. So I'm wondering: would the speed and convenience be worth sacrificing some of the flexibility? 2. Multi-colour printing Another idea I've been playing around with is using multiple filament colours. I already have different colours available, and I'd love to experiment with printing some of the details directly rather than relying entirely on painting. I just haven't had the time to properly set this up and experiment with it yet. Would multi-colour printable terrain be something you'd actually be interested in? 3. Actual building sets Right now, the system is essentially a collection of individual components. Another direction would be to create building/ruin sets with simple instructions showing you exactly which pieces to use to build a specific structure. So instead of having a box of modular parts and having to figure everything out yourself, you'd have something like: "Here's the parts list. Here's how you build this ruin." But you could still take those same parts and build something completely different if you wanted to. These are just a few ideas I've been considering, but I'm much more interested in hearing what you would like to see. What would make a modular terrain system like this more useful to you? Are there features you think are missing? Would you prefer more freedom, more predefined designs, faster setup, more visual variety, or something completely different? And if you have questions about how the current system works, feel free to ask those too. I'm very open to criticism, questions, weird ideas, and completely different suggestions. One of the things I've learned from developing this project is that the discussions here are incredibly valuable. So: what would you do next? submitted by /u/lets-make-tabletop [link] [comments]
