Kyle Walker has been a massive part of Burnley’s terrible start to the season and deserved to be dropped for their last game. This is the view of Joe Redmond from the Turfcast Podcast, who backed the decision not to play the club captain during their 1-1 draw at home to Burnley last weekend.Walker is Burnley’s club captain due to his vast experienceGettyThe former England international is into his second season as a Burnley player with the Clarets sitting bottom of the Championship.Burnley started the season as one of the favourites for promotion, but after eight games, they are the only team in the division without a win.The Clarets have drawn four and lost four, including conceding a late equaliser at the weekend at home to the Rams.It leaves them three points off safety and nine points off the final play-off place, which is eighth this year.Walker has been playing as a centre-back for the majority of the season but after the 3-1 defeat at Swansea in September, he was dropped and didn’t make it off the bench for the second time in the league this year.On Burnley boss Nicky Hayden’s decision to exclude Walker, Redmond told talkSPORT’s EFL All Access podcast: “”No, “I think it was the correct decision to drop him personally. “I do think he’s been poor this season. He should be able to have a great influence on the squad, he has won literally everything that there is to win in club football.“You cannot have a career better than Kyle Walker‘s, really. He has done everything. And obviously you’ve got to respect what he’s achieved in the game and things like that. But ultimately, he has been a massive part of the problem.“I do think some of it as well. I do feel sorry for Kyle as well in a certain aspect because he’s been played out of position. Against Swansea, for example, we have three right-backs on the pitch. Obviously, Connor Roberts was at left back.“Kyle Walker was at centre back. And Oliver Sonne was at right back. So I don’t think it is just down to Kyle’s poor performances, but I do think he has played poorly. I think it was the right decision to drop him against Derby.Hayen is under increasing pressure and had declared the Derby match a must-winGetty“And of course, the goalkeeper as well, Max Weiss, who had an absolute howler against Swansea and has done for the majority of the season. But Kyle has been poor. And if he hears this, I know that he would admit that as well. He would say that he has not been up to the standards that he would set himself.“I did think it was a little surprising in the sense that he did a lot of media in the week leading up to it. He met up with the fan advisory board, he met up with some staff.“He did loads of interviews with the rights holders saying, ‘Yeah, we need to be better. We need to improve. We need to man up’ is a term that he used just for him to be dropped. So that element of it was a little bit surprising.“But I think what I said on my channel is when you look at the performances through the course of the season, has Kyle done enough to deserve to start against Derby County? For me, it is a no.”Clarets under pressureHayen has already admitted that he isn’t sure he’ll keep his job for too much longer.When asked if he feared for his role following the draw to Derby, he said: “I understand the frustration of the fans; I understand that they’re really disappointed – also, in myself, that they’re fuming. I completely understand and I know how it goes in football, but… I’m honest and I tell the truth and I’m not hiding behind it.Burnley’s bad start to the season has been characterised by lots of poor defensive errorsGetty“There are a lot of reasons [for Burnley’s poor start to the season] and you take this into account or you don’t, and that’s up to other people to decide…“If we have 11 players, everyone thinks they’re fit and they’re fresh and they go for [it] 100 per cent, but the reality sometimes is different and you only know when you are on the inside.“But I know I cannot claim a lot at the moment. I know that I’m responsible for it and if they [the club] make the decision that it’s not good enough, then we’ll see.“But… I’m resilient; I was always a fighter. I will keep on fighting and… I’m 100 per cent sure that we can turn it around with these [next] three weeks, but we’ll see what happens.”Burnley now have three weeks until they are back in action when they play Watford, who are also struggling.And Hayen plans to take the Clarets away to a warm-weather training camp despite having eight players on international duty.“So we will have a few days off for the players, where they really can switch off for football, leave the negativity behind and come back with fresh energy.“We also have a running programme, because for us it’s like a new pre-season, even if it’s three weeks, but it will be important.“So it’s like you start with the running sessions, then we go on a camp, and then we have the preparation towards Watford.“I can say again it’s a must-win game, but this will be a week and a game where we want to show a really new face and a totally different one than now.”
