Josh Isner is new to the sport but he has hit the ground running. The president of Axon Enterprise, which makes the hardware and software used by police departments and produces Tasers, body cameras and dashcams, Isner did not start his first horse until the 2025 Saratoga meet. But he has made up for lost time. He has rapidly expanded his Delta Squad Racing Stable, which now owns a piece of GI Haskell Stakes winner Baby Vino (Vino Rosso). He has also been an active buyer at the Keeneland September sale.Isner was this week's Gainesway Guest of the Week on the TDN Writers' Room Podcast presented by Keeneland. Isner discussed his background, which includes a degree from Harvard, why he is so passionate about the sport, how he would address the industry's problems and more.His dream is to win the GI Kentucky Derby, which he said is a possibility for any owner.“When you're 40 years old, you can't really wake up and say, 'Hey, I want to win the Masters this year or I want to try to win the Super Bowl,” Isner said. “But you can wake up and say, 'I want to try to win the Kentucky Derby.' I know it's really, really hard. You have to have a tremendous amount of luck. Most will never experience that. But you can try and it's perfectly possible for somebody to be able to do it.”He was introduced to the sport by a friend, Dave Portnoy, the owner of Go Go Greys Stable.“Dave invited me up to the Whitney last year and took me to the sale,” Isner said. “We had known each other for a few years and he had me pegged as a fellow degenerate and someone who would jump right into this game. I asked him about a million questions. I asked him everything from 'Why does that horse have a white foot? How do we win the Kentucky Derby next year?' I just fell in love with it and I am having a ton of fun.”What would he do to improve the sport? He knows there are no easy solutions, but he feels that the industry will not move in the right direction until all the major owners come together and cooperate more than they do now.“You would think the owners would all just get on the same page,” he said. “The only thing that can institute change in the sport is the buying power. If the owners say, 'Hey, we're just not going to participate in this anymore until this, this and this get resolved,' then all of a sudden I think there would be a lot of people motivated to make some simple changes in the sport. That can include some of the rules around the sales, more funding for aftercare, looking out more for smaller operations and breeders. In the NFL, you look at all these owners, and they compete like hell on the field, but as soon as the game is over, they're all on the same team and trying to do what they can to maximize the viewership and the momentum behind the sport. Here, it just doesn't feel that way. It feels like there are factions of owners and everyone kind of has a different thing that they care about. There's got to be some way to get the owners together more as a group to say, 'Look, here are the things we care about and the things that need to be fixed.'”The “Fastest Horse of the Week” was GI Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Forever Young (Jpn) ({Real Steel}), who earned a 105 Beyer figure in his win on opening day at the new Belmont Park.
