For fifteen years, "search visibility" meant one thing: where a URL sat in a list of ten blue links. That model is quietly breaking. A growing share of users now get their answer from a synthesized paragraph — generated by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI Overviews — and never click through to a source at all.The problem for developers and technical marketers is that this surface is largely invisible to existing tooling. Google Search Console does not report whether ChatGPT names a given brand. A rank tracker does not know whether Perplexity cited one domain instead of another. If you want that data, you have to collect it yourself.
