Disney’s Pop Century Resort has spent nearly 23 years surrounding guests with oversized pieces of nostalgia, but one familiar part of that experience suddenly disappeared.The longtime feature had been at the Disney World hotel since its earliest years, becoming part of the scenery that countless guests passed during vacations. Instead of relying on subtle details, Disney went big. Really big.Guests encounter enormous yo-yos, bowling pins, Rubik’s Cubes, rollerblades, and other objects tied to different eras. Disney characters also appear throughout the property, helping turn what could have been a straightforward hotel into something much more playful.That approach has helped Pop Century remain recognizable even as Disney has modernized portions of the resort.Today, another major selling point is transportation. The Disney Skyliner connects Pop Century with EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, offering guests an alternative to buses when traveling between those parks.But for longtime visitors, the hotel’s appeal also comes from its smaller nostalgic details. That makes the sudden disappearance of one of those pieces much more noticeable.Credit: DisneyAn Opening-Day Staple Is Suddenly GoneThe missing staple is Goofy’s red hot rod, which had long been parked between Pop Century’s 1960s and 1970s areas.On September 23, a video shared on social media showed crews lifting the vehicle from its longtime location before towing it away. The car sat near the edge of the courtyard and within walking distance of the Everything POP main building.According to social media account @DashDestinations, a damaged windshield led to the removal.That explanation could be good news for guests hoping the hot rod will return. If Disney simply needs to repair or replace the windshield, the vehicle could eventually return to its familiar spot. For now, there is no announced return date and no confirmation that Disney intends to reinstall it.That uncertainty is what makes the removal particularly interesting.Goofy’s hot rod wasn’t a ride or a major attraction. Guests didn’t plan their vacations around seeing it. Still, it was exactly the type of unusual decoration that gave Pop Century its personality.After more than two decades, plenty of returning guests immediately recognize these pieces as part of the resort.Now, they’ll have to wait to see whether this one comes back.Credit: DisneyPop Century’s New LookThe timing also comes after Disney completed a broader series of updates around Pop Century, including a refresh of its guest rooms.Rather than completely rebuilding the rooms, Disney focused on a soft-goods update that brought more color and personality into the existing design.The refreshed rooms feature warm wood-toned flooring alongside a geometric inset that creates the appearance of an area rug. Blue, gray, green, and orange add color to the flooring, while soft blue tones appear around portions of the bed wall and bathroom area.Disney also updated the curtains and upholstery. The chairs now feature retro-inspired patterns with Hidden Mickey details worked into the fabric.Some familiar Disney artwork remains as well. The pull-down bed features Pluto sleeping and dreaming of bones, while Mickey Mouse artwork continues the room’s pop art style.The result keeps the basic functionality of the previous rooms while adding more color and visual character.Those changes followed other work around the resort. Disney also refreshed the lobby, adding bold artwork inspired by different decades and the Fab Five. Everything POP Shopping & Dining and Petals Pool Bar have also received attention.In other words, Pop Century has been evolving while Disney tries to preserve the colorful identity that made the hotel distinctive in the first place.Credit: DisneyIs This Removal Permanent?For now, that is the big question.A broken windshield provides a reasonable explanation for why Disney needed to remove Goofy’s hot rod, and the temporary barriers could suggest crews expect additional work in the area.But until Disney confirms what comes next, there is no guarantee the vehicle will return.Pop Century will celebrate 23 years of operation in December 2026.
