Former Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has revealed why he believes the Ballon d’Or should not go to his former Spurs teammate, Harry Kane. The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is set to take place at the Palladium Theatre in London in just two days, and that is the topic dominating discussions in the football media over the last week.We have seen Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal both campaign publicly for the Ballon d’Or, with the Real Madrid and Barcelona stars not shy of claiming to be the ones most deserving of the award. However, Tottenham’s record goalscorer Harry Kane remains the favourite to be crowned the best footballer in the world after his record-breaking season for Bayern Munich.Photo by Paul ELLIS / AFP via Getty ImagesCristian Romero says Lionel Messi should win Ballon d’Or over former Tottenham teammate Harry KaneRomero does not think that his former Spurs teammate should be crowned the Ballon d’Or winner, but neither does he think Mbappe and Yamal are deserving. The Atletico Madrid star believes that his international teammate Lionel Messi should continue winning the award until he hangs up his boots.Romero told ESPN (via The Sun): “The Ballon d’Or should be given to Leo Messi. Until he retires, that’s clear. There is no one like him. Surely when he decides not to play anymore, then we will have to see who to give it to.”Kane shows his class ahead of Ballon d’Or ceremonyUnlike his main competitors for the award, Kane has not blown his own trumpet or spoken about why he should be the one to win it.Despite arguably having the best case to be crowned the best player in the world, the Tottenham legend made it clear that it is not his style to campaign for the award. When asked about his response to Mbappe and Yamal saying they deserve the Ballon d’Or, Kane told Standard Sport: “Everyone is entitled to do what they want to do in that situation. Obviously the Ballon d’Or has become bigger and bigger over recent years, mainly because of social media, and all the noise, and all the conversations about it.“From my point of view, it’s just not my personality to talk about myself in that light. I’m still very proud of what I’ve done. And from a principle point of view, I know what I achieved last year was as good as anyone. So I don’t want to shy away from that either. But ultimately, my mindset is to move on.”READ MORE: How many games Pedro Porro will miss for Tottenham after one-month injury revealThe post Cristian Romero says Ballon d’Or should not go to Harry Kane despite Tottenham link appeared first on Spurs Web.
