A rainy, dreary evening at Mountaineer Park took on the proportions of a Homeric drama by the time Monday's sixth race came around, thanks to what could have been a potentially catastrophic spill followed by a collection of held breaths and finally a welcome resolution.Early in the six-furlong sprint, six-year-old gelding Candy Street (Twirling Candy) clipped heels and dropped his rider, Michael Pagan, before taking off in the opposite direction.By the time the field were well into the stretch, Candy Street was barreling towards them from the other direction. The stewards had already sounded the alarm, however, and the track announcer made repeated overtures for the riders to pull up. And so, by the time Candy Street was upon them, the field had pulled to the side, allowing the loose horse to scoot on by unimpeded. The race was declared no contest.Michael Bish, Mountaineer's director of racing, described both horse and rider as suffering minor injuries but nothing serious.“Legs are cut up a little bit,” said Bish, about Candy Street. “But as of right now, nothing serious.”Pagan was immediately taken to hospital with numbness and loss of feeling in his legs. But by Tuesday morning, he had been sent home, said Bish.“I heard from a couple people he was feeling better. Just real sore. But he had regained all the feeling in his legs, and he was actually home from the hospital,” said Bish. The last two races on Monday's card were abandoned due to the events of the sixth race.“Most of the guys were shaken up about it. It was a bad rainy night,” said Bish. “With that weighing on everybody's mind, we went ahead and cancelled the last two.”Tuesday's card at Mountaineer, however, is scheduled to go ahead as planned.“I've just spoken with all the riders, everybody's on board,” said Bish. “We'll just regroup and hit 'em again tonight.”INSANE incident at mountaineer with loose horse bolting up the rail on the opposite side while horses entering the stretch.
